A good restaurant for a casual meal but it is noisy with all of the people waiting for Ohana., September 9, 2007

Pros: Good food, wide variety of specialty drinks, desserts on display
Cons: Noisy. A little pricey for the very casual atmosphere.

We ate for the first time at Kona Cafe for dinner during our August 2007 trip. There are four of us: myself, my wife (DW), our daughter 10 (DD) and our son 8 (DS). We checked in about 15 minutes early for our 7 pm ADR and sat down in the lounge area outside of Ohana. It was crowded with people waiting for both Kone Cafe and Ohana. This contributes to the overall noise when you're sitting at Kone Cafe. Our pager went off and we were seated at a table at the entrance across from the check-in station. Being at the entrance and along the outside rail really added to how much the noise from the lobby impacted us. A table farther in to the restaurant would have been better.

We ordered drinks while we looked over the menu. Wine by the glass for DW and I and chocolate milk for the kids. This is one area where the casual atmosphere at Kona Cafe really comes through. A different server than our waiter came to our table holding the two bottles of wine in one hand by the necks. Instead of setting one of the bottles down so she could uncorked and pour the other, she went through a juggling routine to pull the cork while holding both bottles. A little too casual for the prices we were paying. To make matters worse she had brought out the wrong wine for DW. She asked if DW wanted that instead. DW said no. A Chardonnay is no replacement for a Pinot Grigio. The server ended up leaving a half a glass of the Chardonnay and then returned in a few minutes with the correct wine.

DS couldn’t find anything on the kids menu that he liked (you can only have so many burgers or pasta) so he decided to have the pot stickers appetizer as a main course. For the rest of us we ordered the crab cakes as an appetizer to go with the bread they bring out. The bread was good but no one enjoyed the macadamia butter. I had the beef teriyaki substituting rice for the mashed potatoes, DW had the macadamia mahi-mahi and DD had the pan-asian noodles with shrimp.

Our main courses were good but not great. The steak was cooked correctly and flavorful but I have had better cuts of meat at the same price point. DS enjoyed the pot stickers although he eats them without the sauce. DD’s noodle stir-fry was good although she concentrated mostly on the shrimp. DW didn’t enjoy the mahi-mahi. She had expected the macadamia nuts to be crushed acting more as a coating and instead they were in big chunks. She ate it but would be unlikely to order it again.

Desserts is one area where Kona Cafe shines. Once they kids had finished their meals they went up to check out the dessert display. I always enjoy restaurants that do this as it is sometimes hard to decide exactly what a dessert is from a description. I passed on dessert but DW had the caramel-banana creme brulee while the kids had the Kona Kone. Everyone enjoyed there desserts.

Overall Kona Cafe is good for a casual meal. I would recommend asking for a table farther into the restaurant. Where Kone Cafe falls short is in comparison to other restaurants in the same price range. A few nights before we ate a Le Cellier and for only $20 more had a much better meal. Would we eat at Kone Cafe again? Maybe. Kona has not made it on to our list of “have to eat at” restaurants but we would eat here again if it was convenient.
